Part of the Finding The American Dream Season
We’re celebrating the birthday of composer Lalo Schifrin, who turns 89 on 21 June.
Schifrin was Oscar-nominated for his score to Stuart Rosenberg’s Cool Hand Luke. Composed in between his work on the Mission: Impossible TV series and Peter Yates’ Bullitt, Schifrin’s jazz and Americana-infused score is as light on its feet as Luke himself and makes for the perfect partner of a man who won’t be constrained by the machinery of control.
When petty criminal Luke Jackson (Newman) is sentenced to two years in a Florida prison farm, he doesn’t play by the rules of either the sadistic warden (Martin) or the yard’s resident heavy, Dragline (Kennedy), who ends up admiring the new guy’s unbreakable will. Luke’s bravado makes him a rebel hero to his fellow convicts and a thorn in the side of the prison officers.
