Verisimilitude: Celebrating Richard Donner

Acclaimed genre director Richard Donner, passed away on 5 July 2021 at the age of 91. His humble beginnings in the land of TV's THE BANANA SPLITS and DANGER ISLAND belied the big screen success that awaited him. An episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE ("Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" starring a young William Shatner) gave audiences a glimpse of his cinematic sensibilities, but it took another 13 years before his Oscar-winning THE OMEN surprised and thrilled audiences around the world. Two years later he would direct a film (and part of its sequel at the same time) that would become the benchmark for genre filmmaking: SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE. The film starred Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, a host of stage and screen luminaries such as Maria Schell, Harry Andrews, Trevor Howard, Terrence Stamp, Susannah York, Phyllis Thaxter, Ned Beatty, Glen Ford and Jackie Cooper, and launched into stardom the unkown Christopher Reeve as the man of steel.

In 1985 he directed the Steven Spielberg-produced THE GOONIES which became a fan favourite and is still celebrated today. In 1987 he launched the long-running LETHAL WEAPON film series with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover playing a modern-day romantic comedy set as a buddy cop drama that spawned three sequels and a television series. In between these he also directed Richard Pryor in THE TOY, Michelle Pfieffer in LADYHAWKE, Bill Murray in SCROOGED, Elijah Wood in RADIO FLYER, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster in MAVERICK, Sylvester Stallone in ASSASSINS, Mel Gisbson (again) and Julia Roberts in CONSPIRACY THEORY and many others.
